Salmon Well-Being and Welfare

More than just a product, salmon is part of the Norwegian culture. Ocean-farmed salmon are nurtured with meticulous attention by seasoned experts drawing on generations of seafaring traditions.

From hatching through maturity, the salmon’s comfort and care is the number one concern of salmon farmers. Salmon from Norway spend approximately the first year of their life in the safety of a hatchery tank, until they have grown strong enough for a life at sea. The salmon are then carefully transferred to spacious, protected ocean pens that allow them maximum freedom to grow.

Ocean-farmed salmon mature as nature intended—in the natural, ice-cold waters of Norway—until they are ready for market. Monitored by technologically advanced systems, Salmon from Norway receive constant care and attention. The systems can even tell when the salmon are full, and shut down the feeding device, while farmers and veterinarians tend to their every need.

And while salmon are herd animals—preferring to travel in packs—Norwegian law requires that salmon make up less than 2.5% of an aquaculture facility’s volume. This prevents overcrowding and ensures each spacious facility is made up of 97.5% water to allow for maximum comfort.
