Pristine Environment, Naturally Superior Care

Pristine Environment, Naturally Superior Care

Cultivating superior salmon is a source of pride for the Norwegian people. They go to extreme measures to ensure that the fish and environment are treated with care and respect.

Salmon from Norway are raised as nature intended in the country's cold, pristine waters. As such, the salmon stocks are susceptible to the same diseases that affect the surrounding environment. In the past, therapeutic agents were widely used to treat disease outbreaks. Today, however, the use of antibiotics is approaching zero.

The huge reduction in antibiotic use is due to new disease-fighting techniques and preventative measures. Effective vaccination, expertise in disease prevention and educated animal husbandry have improved total fish health and decreased antibiotics use by 97% since 1990, while fish production has increased by 633%.

If a disease requiring treatment does occur, Norway takes extreme measures to track any medications administered to its farmed seafood. Norway documents prescription use to ensure that all medicated fish are traceable.  In addition, medicines are administered only under a veterinarian’s care. Those fish are then held back until cleared for market by The Norwegian Food Safety Authority.  The Norwegian aquaculture industry does this to ensure that there is no risk to the consumer and that all fish are free of medicinal residues and other foreign substances.
